Erich Kästner was a German writer, poet, and screenwriter known for his humorous, socially conscious children’s literature. He was born in 1899 in Dresden, Germany and grew up in a working-class family. Kästner’s most famous works include the children’s books “Emil and the Detectives,” “The 35th of May, or Conrads Ride to the South Seas,” and “Lottie and Lisa,” which have been translated into numerous languages and are still popular today. In addition to his children’s literature, Kästner also wrote poems, plays, and screenplays. He was a member of the anti-Nazi resistance during World War II and was banned from publishing by the Nazi government. After the war, Kästner resumed his writing career and became a prominent figure in Germany’s literary scene. He died in 1974 at the age of 75.
