EL Loko believed that conventional languages — the ones we use every day to communicate — also function as tools of exclusion and the misuse of power. So he built his own. The Cosmic Alphabet draws from African myth, Christian iconography, and a visual intelligence shaped by two continents — not to be decoded, but to be felt. His dream was one language for the entire world, a single way of communication between all human beings on earth. That’s not a small ambition. It’s the most human ambition there is. His works are permanently exhibited at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town — and on large-format museum-grade canvas, the signs and symbols that EL Loko spent a lifetime developing fill a wall the way a prayer fills a room: with intention, with mystery, and with something that doesn’t need translation.
