Bewitched Mill

Among the German Expressionists, who used strong color and exaggerated form to convey emotional content, Franz Marc stood out for his profound empathy toward the life of animals. He once pondered, “Is there a more mysterious idea than to imagine how nature is reflected in the eyes of animals?” Starting in 1905, Marc dedicated himself to portraying the world with a fresh and purifying vision.

Marc painted “The Bewitched Mill” after a sojourn to the Italian town of Merano in the southern Tirol. The painting’s title alludes to the “magical” harmony he felt between human life, depicted by the houses and mill on the left, and nature, symbolized by the lyrical region of trees and animals on the right.
